A New Focus on Sustained Reading
Research suggests that sustained reading—the practice of engaging deeply and continuously with longer texts—plays a crucial role in cognitive development and comprehension skills. Unlike the fleeting consumption of text in everyday life and activities, sustained reading helps build concentration, enrich vocabulary, and enhance understanding and empathy.
As part of our mission to enrich the Northern Reading Program, we’re evolving our approach: moving beyond mere point accumulation for all types of reading. From now on, our emphasis will be on rewarding the time and dedication invested in sustained reading. This means that while all reading has its value, our program will particularly celebrate those who immerse themselves in longer works—be they short stories, poetry, novels, non-fiction books, or comprehensive articles.
Our goal is to encourage true engagement with literature that informs, challenges, and delights. We believe that by fostering a culture of sustained reading, we can support a more profound and rewarding literary journey for all our participants.
