Writing Contest Categories
Adventurers (Pre-K - Grade 6)
- Preschool/Nursery/Kindergarten: Picture Story
- An imaginative illustration exploring themes of adventure and discovery.
- Grade 1 to Grade 2: Story with a Corresponding Picture
- A creative story paired with a drawing, focusing on exciting adventures and explorations.
- Grade 3 to Grade 5: Story (over 300 words) or a Poem
- A narrative or poem that captures the essence of a young adventurer’s journey and experiences.
- Grade 6: Story (over 700 words) or a Poem
- A more detailed story or poem, delving into adventures and challenges, inspiring curiosity and resilience.
Pathfinders (Grade 7 - Grade 12)
- Grade 7 to Grade 8: Story (over 700 words) or a Poem
- A story or poem that reflects on the pathfinder’s experiences, challenges, and personal growth.
- Grade 9 to Grade 12: Story (over 1500 words) or a Poem
- An in-depth story or poem, exploring complex themes and the journey of self-discovery and insight.
Voyagers (Adults)
Short Story (2500+ words), Poetry (any type or length)
- Adult participants are encouraged to craft stories, or poems that delve into themes of life’s voyages, personal reflections, and the rich tapestry of northern experiences.
Joint Effort (Cross Age Collaboration)
Child and Parent/Guardian or Classroom Project
- A collaborative project combining different perspectives and experiences, fostering shared storytelling and creativity
Important Information for Writing Contest Participants
As we gear up for the exciting writing contest of this year’s SaskPower Northern Reading Program, we’d like to share some essential information regarding your submissions:
1. Submission Categories: Please indicate clearly if you are submitting your work as an Adventurer, Pathfinder, Voyager, or as part of a Joint Effort (Cross-Age Collaboration). Here are the categories for your reference:
- Adventurers (Preschool/Nursery/Kindergarten to Grade 6):
- Various formats ranging from picture stories to detailed narratives and poems, focusing on themes of adventure and discovery.
- Pathfinders (Grade 7 to Grade 12):
- Stories or poems reflecting on experiences, challenges, and personal growth, with specific word count requirements based on grade level.
- Voyagers (Adults):
- Short stories (2500+ words) and poetry exploring life’s voyages, personal reflections, and northern experiences.
- Joint Effort (Cross-Age Collaboration):
- Collaborative projects between children and adults, combining perspectives for shared storytelling.
- Adventurers (Preschool/Nursery/Kindergarten to Grade 6):
2. Digital Flip-Book Display: Your writing will be featured in a digital flip-book on our website. For privacy, you may choose to display your initials, or a combination (e.g., A. Smith, Alex S.) on your work.
3. No Post-Submission Editing: Ensure your submission is final as it will not be edited after submission.
Additional Points:
- Age Indication (Optional): Feel free to include your age or grade for context.
- Contact Information: Provide a contact email or phone number for administrative use only; it will not be public.
